How do I correct a bill payment error?

If you paid a bill through Online Banking, Telephone Banking or at a branch from a bank or credit card account, you can cancel the payment if the payment was made today before 11 p.m. (ET).  Bill payments made after 11 p.m. (ET) can be cancelled up to 11 p.m. (ET) the following day.

To cancel a payment,:

  1. Click on Payments & Transfers
  2. Select Cancel a Payment
  3. Confirm that you have selected the right bill
  4. click on Cancel Payment

The funds will be returned to your account immediately. If you missed the deadline above, and would like to request a refund or investigation your payment, follow these steps:

  1. Click on Payments & Transfers
  2. Select Investigate a Bill Payment.
  3. Provide details of the date and amount of the payment you would like to investigate
  4. Select Verify Request
  5. Confirm the details of your investigation
  6. Submit Request

Please note that it may take 10 to15 business days to investigate a bill payment. If your request is time-sensitive, we recommend that you contact the billing company directly. Bill payments made at a branch by cash or from your account to a BMO Credit Card or BMO Line of Credit account must be cancelled by visiting the branch.
